A Fine Art Exhibition of Framed Silk Paintings

by Donna Lynn Friedson

Beacon, New York June 7, 2007: Freshman Fine Arts Gallery is proud to announce the solo exhibition of Donna Lynn Friedson's silk paintings entitled SILK EXTRACTIONS. The opening reception is Saturday, July 14 from 6-9pm and the exhibition will run through August 25th at the gallery in Beacon, NY.

Freshman Fine Arts Gallery is one of the most recent fine art venues to open in Beacon, a town that has become synonymous with contemporary art and is the home of the DIA Museum. The gallery, which opened last December, has become noted for presenting  group and solo exhibits by both renown and emerging artists. As an up and coming Hudson Valley art destination, the gallery is committed to offering works that reflect the inspired level of artistry associated with the region.

As a classically trained painter, Donna Friedson has worked with oil and acrylic on canvas for most of her career. However, the medium of silkpainting became so liberating and complimentary to her expressionistic style that she found canvas was unable to parallel the fresh combination of immediacy, luminosity, sensuality and elegance inherent in silk fabric. Hence Friedson's Silk Extractions show promises to introduce a seductive medium of art that accomplishes something often promised-yet rarely delivered..'paintings that are genuinely different, in both design and material'. The originality of her imaginative patterns, color schemes and vigorously asserted brushstrokes  are modern and alluring.  Friedson's framed silk quilts conjure marvelous diagrammatic visions that succeed in extracting the excitement of canvas painting and transplanting it onto new terrain. Her series of silk paint on silk fabric will range from 35x35" to 8x10". All paintings are handsomely mounted in thick black frames under non-reflective plexiglass.

A pioneering resident of Tribeca for the past 32 years, she produces much of her work in the studio of her home in the Catskills of Sullivan County. She is an Adjunct Professor of Fine Art and Art History, having received her Masters in Art History from Brooklyn College, a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art as well as a degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology. A consummate traveler and researcher, Professor Friedson has explored Europe over 20 times as well as extensive ventures to other continents . She has resided in Lisbon, Portugal and Copenhagen, Denmark where she studied Danish design.

Professor Friedsonís appreciation for the non-western art of Africa, the Native Americas, and the Aboriginal Art of Austrailia have ignited her own eclectic and exhilarating creations. Her vibrant and expressionistic paintings, pastels, charcoal and pencil drawings, ceramics, surface designs, and her latest series of silkpaintings are attestations of her virtuosity and capacity to adapt and engage.

Organizations she belongs to are the Surface Design Association, Silkworm (Silkpainters International) ,The American Craft Council, and The Graphic Artistís Guild.
